On November 8, 2011 I went on my first out-of-town excursion in Argentina. I took a local train from Lisandro de la Torre to Tigre, a town about 23 km north of Buenos Aires. The train was packed and after breaking down, we had to get off the train and another one scooped us up, but by 1 pm, I had arrived in Tigre, a famous resort town in the Parana River Delta. Named after the jaguars that used to live here, Tigre has many English-style rowing clubs (even the architecture is British!) and attractive mansions. I also went on a river tour where I got to see the vacation homes that have been built along the many river branches of the Parana Delta. The Puerto de Frutos in Tigre used to be the warehouses for shipping out locally grown fruit, but since the 1980s, the buildings have been re-functioned into an arts and crafts market. Now you can buy hand-made wood and wicker furniture, wicker baskets, home décor items and there are still a few fruit and vegetable stores. Various bars and restaurants are also in the area and an amusement park is right next to the Puerto de Frutos.
